Request a Street Tree

A free street tree planted in the city right-of-way in front of your home
City of Charlotte residents can ask the city to plant a free tree in the planting strip between the sidewalk and street, or in the right-of-way if there is no sidewalk. An inspector visits to confirm there is room; qualifying addresses go on the list for an upcoming planting season. The city plants between January and April each year.
Who qualifies
The location must be in the City of Charlotte right-of-way (the grass strip between sidewalk and street). If there is no sidewalk, call 704-336-4262 to confirm the right-of-way. The inspector decides whether a tree can be planted.
How to apply
Fill out the online Street Tree Request Form, call 311 (704-336-7600 from outside Mecklenburg County), or email landscapemanagement@charlottenc.gov. Planting a right-of-way tree yourself requires a no-cost permit; planting without one results in a notice of violation and a fine.
