Reforestation of Timberlands Program
馃嚭馃嚫 VA, United States 路 Virginia Department of Forestry
Reimbursement for part of the cost of site preparation, planting and release when establishing pines on cutover land or worn-out fields
The Reforestation of Timberlands (RT) Program has helped Virginia landowners grow pines for more than 50 years. It is funded by the state's forest industry through the Forest Products Tax with a General Fund match, and reimburses a share of the cost of getting a pine crop started; DOF says a pine planting typically costs $100 to $250 per acre. A DOF forester helps pick eligible practices. DOF also runs a Hardwood Initiative Cost-Share Program covering 90 percent of approved hardwood management practices on tracts of 5 acres or more.
Who qualifies
Virginia landowners with cutover timberland or worn-out fields suited to pine. Specific acreage limits and payment rates are in DOF topic sheet FT0020 (updated April 2026) and confirmed by the local forester.
How to apply
Contact your local DOF forester (use 'Find a DOF Forester' on dof.virginia.gov) to plan practices and apply. Applications are generally accepted starting in May each year until funds are committed; payment is made after the landowner has paid the contractor.
