9-hour course ($100) leading to a license to prune NYC street trees
Trees New York runs the 9-hour Citizen Pruner Course, four sessions covering how trees grow, street tree identification, common problems and pruning methods. Students who pass the final exam receive a license from Trees New York and NYC Parks to prune street trees. Trees New York is the only institution designated to train and license Citizen Pruners in New York City.
Who qualifies
Open to the public; the page states no eligibility requirements. The weekend field outing is mandatory and all sessions must be taken at the same location. Licensees must follow the Citizen Pruner Code of Conduct.
How to apply
Register through the Schedule & Registration page when a course is open. The course fee is $100. As of November 2026, the next (spring 2027) course will be announced in March; fill out the Citizen Pruner Interest Form to be emailed when the schedule is set.
