Low-cost bare-root tree and shrub seedlings grown for wildlife food and cover, sold to the public when surplus is available
The Game Commission's Howard Nursery in Centre County grows bare-root seedlings for wildlife habitat on State Game Lands and, in years with surplus, sells them to the public in a January sale with spring pickup or shipping. Species vary each year with seed supply and growing conditions. The nursery also sells handcrafted wildlife homes (bluebird, bat, owl and wood duck boxes) and runs a separate free Seedlings for Schools program for K-12 schools.
Who qualifies
Open to the public when a sale is held; no residency requirement is stated. Seedlings for Schools is limited to Pennsylvania K-12 schools (homeschoolers order through a group or co-op).
How to apply
When a public sale runs, orders are placed through an online or printed order form posted on the nursery page in January; payment is due after the nursery confirms the order. Questions: 814-355-4434, Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Schools order at pgcforms.pa.gov/SeedlingsForSchool.
