Permission to plant trees in the public right-of-way, with possible funding for trees, planting and watering
Individuals, community groups and nonprofits can ask Metro Nashville for permission to plant trees in the public right-of-way. Metro Water Services and the Nashville Department of Transportation review the plan; approved requests receive any required changes to placement or species, a Right-of-Way Permit application, safety guidance, and information on potential funding for trees, planting and watering. Trees must average 2-inch caliper and 6 feet tall and come from the Metro Tree Advisory Committee recommended list.
Who qualifies
Open to community and nonprofit organizations and individuals. Trees must be planted 25 feet from intersections, at least 10 feet from drain inlets, hydrants, overhead power lines, utility boxes and streetlights, and must not block sight lines or signs.
How to apply
Submit the online form with your name, email and phone, a planting plan map (up to 25 MB), a tree list with quantities (up to 10 MB), estimated planting time, and a maintenance plan covering watering for the first two growing seasons and the first corrective prune. Questions: Metro Water Services 615-862-4600 or hubNashville (311).
