The Minnesota DNR's State Forest Nursery in Akeley grows and sells bareroot conifer, hardwood and shrub seedlings for conservation planting on Minnesota land. Conifers are 2-4 years old and hardwoods 1-3 years old, and every seedling is inspected before sale. Orders for spring 2027 planting are open now.
Who qualifies
Anyone can order, but seedlings may only be planted in Minnesota and cannot be redistributed, given away or resold (Minn. Stat. 89.38). Minimum order is 300 seedlings, mixed in 100-seedling lots of a single species; 250-seedling mixed packets are available for smaller plantings.
How to apply
Order online at webapps.dnr.state.mn.us/nursery with a LoginMN account or guest checkout; pay by card, e-check, or mail a paper check to the DNR Division of Forestry (seedlings are not reserved until the check arrives). Order by March 12, 2027. Pick up free at the Akeley nursery on your assigned days (late April-May), choose a $20 flat-rate drop point (Brainerd, Caledonia, Detroit Lakes, Tower, Wannaska or Willow River), or pay for home delivery. Cancellations after January 15, 2027 incur a 25% restocking fee.
