Greening the Gateway Cities Program
馃嚭馃嚫 MA, United States 路 Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, Urban and Community Forestry
Free 6-to-10-foot trees planted on your property by DCR crews if you live in a planting zone of a participating Gateway City
DCR's Greening the Gateway Cities Program plants trees in dense residential neighborhoods of Massachusetts Gateway Cities to cut household heating and cooling costs and grow canopy by about 5 percent in target zones. A DCR forester visits, picks species and locations with you, and crews hired from the community plant the trees at no charge. Participating cities include Barnstable, Brockton, Chelsea, Chicopee, Everett, Fall River, Fitchburg, Haverhill, Holyoke, Lawrence, Leominster, Lowell, Lynn, Malden, New Bedford, Pittsfield, Quincy, Revere, Salem, Springfield, Taunton, Westfield and Worcester.
Who qualifies
Residents and business owners whose address falls inside a GGCP planting zone in a participating city. Renters may request trees, but the property owner must sign for final approval. In Springfield the zone has been expanded to most of the city.
How to apply
Check the 'Am I in the Zone?' map and submit the 'Sign Me Up' form at maurbancanopy.org, or call GGCP at 617-626-1400 or your city's local GGCP office (Springfield residents can call 3-1-1). A forester then schedules a site visit. Expect to sign a two-year watering agreement.
