75% cost-share to write a 10-year forest management plan and up to 50% cost-share to carry it out, on 5 or more acres of forested or formerly forested land
The Forest Stewardship Program helps private owners of forested or formerly forested land in Hawaii manage it for forest resource values. The state reimburses 75% of the cost of developing a 10-year forest management plan and up to 50% of the cost of implementing approved practices, at program-set rates, subject to funding. Proposals and plans are reviewed by the Forest Stewardship Advisory Committee (FSAC), which ranks eligible plans for state funding; DLNR-DOFAW approves its recommendations.
Who qualifies
Owners of at least 5 contiguous acres of forested (or formerly forested) land who intend to actively manage at least 5 acres. Individuals, joint owners, private groups, associations, corporations and lease or license holders may apply; leases must run at least 10 years.
How to apply
Contact Division of Forestry and Wildlife staff at (808) 333-6803 or through the division's contact form to discuss your project, then submit a project proposal for FSAC review. If approved, write and submit a 10-year management plan for FSAC review, then implement the approved plan. Staff give guidance but do not write proposals or plans; details are in the FSP Handbook (Hawaii Administrative Rules Chapter 109). No deadline is listed.
