Klimaangepasstes Waldmanagement (climate-adapted forest management grant)
🇩🇪 Germany · Bundesministerium für Landwirtschaft, Ernährung und Heimat / BMUKN, administered by Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe (FNR)
Annual per-hectare payments over 10 or 20 years for private and municipal forest owners who commit to 11 or 12 climate-adapted management criteria
A federal programme, started November 2022 and financed since January 2024 from the Aktionsprogramm Natürlicher Klimaschutz, that pays forest owners yearly for managing their whole forest holding to a set of criteria: favouring natural regeneration, site-suited species, no clear-cutting, at least five habitat trees per hectare, 30 m skid-trail spacing, no fertiliser or pesticides, water retention, and (mandatory above 100 ha) 5% natural forest development. Funding is applied for and approved yearly over a 10- to 20-year commitment. Payment rates are set out in the calculation scheme documents on the FNR site.
Who qualifies
The current forest operator registered as a member of the SVLFG (agricultural social insurance), private or municipal; forestry associations may apply if they manage the forest themselves or act as authorised representatives. The whole forest operation area must be enrolled; partial areas are not allowed. A separate calculation applies to holdings up to 100 ha.
How to apply
First-time applications only via the online application at kwm.fnr.de/online-antrag (enter data online, then submit the signed form and proofs: two-sided ID copy, current SVLFG notice, notices of other state funding). Proof of compliance comes from PEFC, FSC or ANW certification. Questions: klimaanpassung-wald@fnr.de.
