Forest Expansion Scheme
🇬🇧 NIR, United Kingdom · DAERA Forest Service
Up to 100% of eligible establishment costs for the first 5 years plus an annual premium of £469/ha for 10 years, for new woodland of 3 ha or more
Northern Ireland's main woodland creation grant, run by DAERA Forest Service. It funds up to 100% of eligible establishment costs and pays a flat annual premium of £469 per hectare for ten years. The premium was raised to a single rate in September 2026 from the previous £75-£425/ha range. Woodlands must meet the UK Forestry Standard. Grants are competitive, favouring projects that deliver the scheme's objectives at lowest cost.
Who qualifies
Farmers, landowners, estate owners, charitable organisations and local councils (councils get the establishment grant only) in Northern Ireland planting new woodland of 3 hectares or more. Land must be in agricultural use to qualify for premiums.
How to apply
Most applicants use a forestry agent; you can discuss a proposal with Forest Service first (028 6634 3145, grants.forestservice@daera-ni.gov.uk). Submit the Woodland Creation Plan application form and costs spreadsheet during an application window. The 2026 window closed at 3pm on 19 October 2026. For plots of 0.2-3 ha, the Small Woodland Grant Scheme is due to open in late November 2026.
