Forest Ag Program (forestland agricultural tax valuation)
馃嚭馃嚫 CO, United States 路 Colorado State Forest Service with county assessors
Forestland of 40 or more contiguous acres managed for wood products is valued for property tax like agricultural land
Created by the Colorado legislature in 1990 and run by the Colorado State Forest Service, Forest Ag lets owners of working forestland receive a property tax valuation similar to agricultural land. Owners must follow a CSFS-approved Forest Stewardship Plan and Annual Work Plan that produce tangible wood products such as sawlogs, posts, poles, firewood or Christmas trees. CSFS inspects the work each year and recommends qualifying properties to the county assessor.
Who qualifies
Own at least 40 contiguous forested acres managed primarily to produce wood products for profit, with a Forest Stewardship Plan written by a professional forester and approved by CSFS. Participation is voluntary and requires an annual enrollment fee.
How to apply
Submit your Forest Stewardship Plan, enrollment fee and the Forest Ag Inspection Request Form to CSFS by October 1 to be considered for the following tax year (the 2027 form is on the program page). Request changes to the Annual Work Plan with the separate change application. Your local CSFS field office can help with forms and a list of foresters.
