Haitian farmer network whose members planted 1.09 million trees in 2025 in exchange for seed, tools and training
About
The Smallholder Farmers Alliance (SFA) is a Haitian nonprofit founded in 2010 by Hugh Locke and agronomist Timote Georges. Its 10,394 farmer members grow trees in 37 nurseries clustered around 10 branch locations, then transplant and care for them on their land, earning 'tree currency' redeemable for crop seed, tools, training and microcredit. Trees go into living fences, orchards, slope-stabilizing contour plantings and land reclamation. In 2025 members planted 1,087,887 trees and reforested 342 hectares; the US affiliate Impact Farming handles donations.
What they run
Members plant and care for trees on their land as living fences, contour plantings and reclamation and earn farm services (seed, tools, training) in return.
37 farmer-run tree nurseries clustered around the SFA's 10 branch locations grow the seedlings members transplant.
New orchards planted with fruit trees for farmer members; 103 were created in 2025.
Lessons on environmental responsibility and the value of trees for young Haitians, including a high-school booklet and a 350-student pilot in 2025.
