Agroforestry at scale: equips African smallholders to plant over 100 million trees a year

About

One Acre Fund is a nonprofit social enterprise founded in 2006 that supplies smallholder farmers in ten African countries with seed, fertilizer, training and tree seedlings on credit, and reaches millions more through government and partner programs. Its tree program distributes seedlings from thousands of community nurseries for farmers to plant on their own land, mixing timber, fruit, nut and fodder species. The organization reported 134 million trees planted by farmers in 2025 and 90 million in 2024, and aims for 1 billion cumulative trees by 2030.

What they run

Distributes tree seedlings raised in networks of community nurseries to smallholder farmers, who plant them on farm boundaries and fields; runs in all One Acre Fund countries and drives its 1-billion-trees-by-2030 goal.

Early-stage agroforestry carbon projects in Tanzania, Zambia (where farmers receive tree-survival payments) and Malawi's Munda Otsogola pilot, with a cumulative 15,000 farmers enrolled.
