Public-private nonprofit planting, giving away and caring for trees across Charlotte and Mecklenburg County since 2012

About

TreesCharlotte is a Charlotte, North Carolina 501(c)(3) that partners with the City of Charlotte and the community to grow and steward the city's tree canopy, with a vision of 50% canopy coverage. Its TreeAdoptions hand out free yard trees (two per household) to Mecklenburg County residents at roughly nine events each planting season, while CommunityWoods TreeDays bring volunteers and trained TreeMasters to plant 25 or more trees at neighborhoods, schools, churches and apartment communities. The organization also runs TreeCare workdays, seedling distributions and the Treesilience Initiative, a multi-year tree-equity program in the under-canopied Greenville and Historic Hoskins neighborhoods. It reports 66,482 trees planted and distributed and 651 events since 2012.

What they run

Free tree pick-up events for Mecklenburg County residents (limit two trees per registration), most targeted at specific zip codes, with a required planting demonstration; about nine events per season from September to March.

Volunteer planting events of at least 25 trees at neighborhoods, schools and organizations in Mecklenburg County; TreesCharlotte supplies trees, mulch, equipment and TreeMaster leaders, and TreeKeepers revisit sites at 2, 4 and 6 years.

Volunteer workdays to mulch, prune and water previously planted trees.

Multi-year, grant-funded tree-equity investment in under-canopied Charlotte neighborhoods (currently Greenville and Historic Hoskins), free to residents.
