Community charity planting a million native trees with farmers in the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons)

About

Stump Up For Trees is a community-based charity in Abergavenny, south-east Wales, that aims to plant one million native broadleaf trees in and around the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons). It began in 2017 when farmer-vet Keith Powell and author Rob Penn organised the planting of 135,000 trees on Bryn Arw Common, and registered as a charity (1188226) in February 2020. It works with upland farmers and other landowners to add trees and hedgerows to farmland and set aside unproductive land for woodland, grows stock in its own community nursery, runs volunteer work parties through the winter planting season, and passed half a million trees planted in spring 2026 across more than 150 farming families and landowners.

What they run

Grants, advice and volunteer planting that add native trees and hedgerows to working upland farms and set aside least-productive land for woodland.

The founding project: 135,000 native broadleaf trees planted on Bryn Arw Common near Abergavenny in the 2020-21 season.

Volunteer-run nursery growing locally sourced native trees for the charity's planting sites.
