Chicago-region conservation nonprofit growing the urban forest through TreeKeepers and community plantings

About

Openlands, founded in 1963, is one of the oldest metropolitan conservation organizations in the US and serves as the Chicago region's land trust. Its urban forestry work plants native trees with residents on public land in Chicago and the south suburbs, trains volunteers through the TreeKeepers certification course (running since 1991, more than 2,200 certified), awards TreePlanters Grants of 10 to 30 trees to neighborhood groups, and runs an Arborist Registered Apprenticeship. Openlands planted its 10,000th tree in April 2024 and also restores prairie and wetland and protects land across northeastern Illinois.

What they run

Month-long certification course (offered in English and Spanish) after which volunteers plant, prune, mulch and inventory trees across Chicagoland, lead events and form neighborhood TreeKeeper chapters.

Grants to Chicago and near-south-suburb residents and groups to organize a community planting day of 10 to 30 trees on parkways, school grounds and vacant lots, with Openlands supplying trees, tools and two years of maintenance events.

Three-year US Department of Labor registered apprenticeship with Chicago-area tree care companies that trains entry-level urban forestry professionals.
