The Dutch national tree-planting day for schoolchildren, held every year since 1957
About
Stichting Nationale Boomfeestdag in Tilburg organises the Netherlands' national tree-planting day for primary-school children, first held on 10 April 1957 in Apeldoorn after the FAO raised the alarm on deforestation; the foundation says 5 million children have planted 10 million trees since then. Since 2020 the national Boomfeestdag opens a planting season on the third Wednesday of November that runs to the third Wednesday of March, during which municipalities, schools, scouting groups and nature clubs register their own local planting celebrations on the foundation's map, order trees via partner nursery Ebben and use its tree-education platform. The 69th edition opens on 18 November 2026 at Landgoed Prattenburg (Rhenen/Veenendaal) with about 300 children, while more than 20,000 children are expected to plant trees in municipalities nationwide that day. It also runs Kinderbossen (children's forests) in eight provinces and provincial celebrations.
What they run
Annual national opening event (third Wednesday of November) and a planting season to the third Wednesday of March in which municipalities and schools hold local Boomfeestdag celebrations where children plant trees; 2026/27 theme 'Tijdreizen met bomen'.
Forests in eight provinces where families plant trees and shrubs with a forest ranger on annual planting days as a gift for a child up to 12; three new Kinderbossen (Meinweg, Heerenveen, Westerwolde) announced in October 2025.
