Miami-Dade County's campaign to reach 30% tree canopy, anchored by the Adopt-a-Tree free tree giveaways

About

Million Trees Miami is a Miami-Dade County initiative launched in 2011 by Neat Streets Miami (formerly the Community Image Advisory Board) within the Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, aiming to plant one million trees and reach 30 percent tree canopy countywide, with the County committing to 300,000 trees and municipalities, schools, businesses and residents asked to plant the rest. The County's Adopt-a-Tree program, run since 2001 by the Division of Environmental Resources Management, gives single-family and duplex homeowners up to two free trees per season at large weekend events and has distributed over 262,000 trees. The County also sponsored a 2021 urban tree canopy assessment with American Forests and funds matching grants for municipal street tree planting from its Tree Trust Fund.

What they run

Free locally grown trees (up to two per season) for Miami-Dade single-family and duplex homeowners, distributed first-come first-served at three large giveaway events a year (2026: Hialeah Gardens in May, FIU Biscayne Bay in July, Zoo Miami in September); run by the County's Division of Environmental Resources Management.

Matching grants from the County's Tree Trust Fund to municipalities, schools and nonprofits for street and park tree planting that counts toward the Million Trees Miami goal; partners can also register their own plantings with the campaign.
