Restoring Ireland's Wild Atlantic Rainforest through native woodland creation, nurseries and community

About

Hometree is a nature restoration charity founded in 2015 by Matt Smith, Mitch Corbett and Fergal Smith on a farm at Deerpark, Ennistymon, County Clare. Volunteer-run until 2021, it now has 26 staff and owns 518 acres across sites in Clare, Kerry, Sligo, Wicklow and Connemara, including the 280-acre Cnoc谩n B谩n site that anchors its Wild Atlantic Rainforest Project to restore temperate rainforest along the west coast. It grows native trees from seed in its own nursery, planted nearly 150,000 native trees in 2025, works with farmers and landowners through land partnerships and the Iveragh Woodlands EIP, and hosts twice-monthly volunteer days, summer schools and the Dinnseanchas arts programme.

What they run

Land acquisition and restoration of temperate rainforest habitat along Ireland's west coast, starting with the 280-acre Cnoc谩n B谩n site in Connemara; goal of about 4,000 acres across eight sites.

Nursery at the Ennistymon HQ growing native trees from locally collected seed, including 20 species not grown commercially.

Work with farmers and landowners to protect and create native woodland on their land, including the Iveragh Woodlands European Innovation Partnership in County Kerry.
