Ecuadorian reserve network that has planted 1.7 million native trees while protecting 42,000 hectares

About

Fundación de Conservación Jocotoco, founded in Quito in 1998, buys and manages a network of private reserves across Ecuador, from the Chocó and Andean páramo to the Tumbesian dry forest and Galápagos. Where purchased land has been cleared it actively restores forest: six on-reserve nurseries can grow more than 120,000 native trees a year, and the foundation reports over 1.7 million trees planted of 140 native species. Its 'Planting the Forest of Tomorrow' project at Buenaventura Reserve aims to add 200,000 trees to former pasture to give cloud-forest species room to move uphill.

What they run

Planting the Forest of Tomorrow (Buenaventura) Reforestation2024–present

Adds 200,000 trees to previously cleared pastures at higher elevations of Buenaventura Reserve so cloud-forest species such as the El Oro Parakeet can shift uphill; the first 20,000 trees were grown in 2024 and planted in early 2025.

Six nurseries on Jocotoco reserves growing species adapted to each site, with combined capacity above 120,000 native trees a year.
