Youth-founded foundation restoring forests in Mexico, Ghana and Spain and running an open restoration platform

About

Plant-for-the-Planet began in 2007 as a school initiative by nine-year-old Felix Finkbeiner in Bavaria and was established as a German foundation in 2011; its registered seat is in Tutzing. It runs its own restoration projects on the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico), in Ghana and in Andalusia (Spain), trains children as 'Climate Justice Ambassadors', and operates a free donation and monitoring platform (Restoration Platform, TreeMapper, FireAlert) used by other restoration organizations. In 2020-2021 German media (Die Zeit, Stern) questioned its Mexican planting and survival figures; the foundation commissioned external audits and revised its statutes and monitoring in response.
