Smallholder microforestry company growing commercial timber with Kenyan farmers

About

Komaza is a forestry company based in Kilifi, Kenya, founded in 2006 by Tevis Howard. Instead of owning plantations it partners with smallholder farmers who provide land and labour, while Komaza supplies seedlings, a farm-management platform, harvesting and a market for the wood. The company operates in Coastal and Central Kenya and has registered a carbon project with Verra. It describes itself as the largest forestry company in Kenya without owning a plantation.

What they run

Farmers plant Komaza-supplied seedlings on underused land, manage them with a mobile platform, and sell the harvested wood back to Komaza for processing.

Carbon removals from the smallholder woodlots are registered as VCS project 2623 on the Verra registry.
