**What you get:** Federal funds that flow through state urban forestry coordinators to cities and nonprofits for tree planting, inventories and care that residents use locally

This is the only federal program dedicated to urban and community trees. The Forest Service funds state forestry agencies, which run their own urban forestry grant rounds for cities, tribes and nonprofits; residents benefit through those local grantees (free tree giveaways, street tree plantings, Tree City USA programs). The program has traditionally been funded at $36 to 40 million a year plus about $1 million in national challenge cost-share grants.

## Who qualifies

Direct funding goes to state agencies and, through them, to local governments, tribes and nonprofit organizations. Individuals do not apply directly; find your state coordinator to learn which local programs are funded near you.

## How to apply

Use the 'Contact your State Coordinator' link on the program page to reach your state's urban and community forestry coordinator, who lists current grant rounds and funded local partners.

**When:** State grant rounds vary; many open once a year

**For:** Municipalities, Community groups, Homeowners, Renters

> Note: The Forest Service page describes the program and its advisory council but does not list resident-facing benefits; what a resident can get depends on the state and local grantee.
