**What you get:** Residents may plant and maintain unplanted tree pits in residential streets after registering the initiative with the city

Rotterdam allows residents to plant and look after tree pits (boomspiegels) around street trees that the municipality has not planted itself. You register the initiative so city crews know about your planting when working near the tree. The tree and pit remain municipal property; the page gives planting advice (shade and sun perennials, annuals, bulbs) and care tips.

## Who qualifies

Residents of residential streets with an unplanted tree pit. No fences or enclosures; add at most 5 cm of compost if any; choose shallow-rooting plants; no chemical pesticides; prune so plants do not obstruct pedestrians.

## How to apply

Submit the 'Meld uw zelfbeheer-initiatief aan' form linked from the page (rotterdam.nl/node/1422), then plant and water the pit yourself.

**For:** Homeowners, Renters, Community groups

> Note: The page does not say whether the city supplies plants or a package. A Rotterdam free-tree scheme could not be located at rotterdam.nl/gratis-boom or /gratis-bomen (404).
