The state nursery in Preston, Caroline County, grows conifer, hardwood and shrub seedlings for reforestation, wildlife habitat, riparian buffers, watershed protection and Christmas tree production. Hardwoods are sold in bundles of 25 per species and conifers in bundles of 50 per species through the online store, which is open for the spring 2027 planting season. Seedlings may not be used for ornamental landscaping, and DNR may ask for a planting report.

## Who qualifies

No residency rule is stated. Seedlings must be used for conservation, reforestation, forest products, wildlife habitat, riparian buffers or Christmas tree production, not ornamental landscaping. The nursery cannot ship to all states because of plant health rules. Larger projects are directed to local Maryland Forest Service offices.
