**What you get:** Grants of $150,000 to $1,500,000 to cities, counties, districts and nonprofits for tree planting, green schoolyards and urban forest management; residents benefit through local plantings

CAL FIRE funds local governments and nonprofits to plant and care for trees in California communities, convert schoolyards to green space, write urban forest management plans and train urban forestry workers. Residents do not apply directly; they benefit when their city, school district or a local tree nonprofit wins a grant and plants trees in their neighborhood. Projects serving disadvantaged or low-income communities receive special consideration.

## Who qualifies

Nonprofit organizations and public agencies (cities, counties, districts, schools). Urban Forest Management Activities grants are limited to local governments. Awards have ranged from $150,000 to $1,500,000 with a 75/25 match that can be in-kind and can be waived for projects serving disadvantaged communities.

## How to apply

Watch the CAL FIRE Urban and Community Forestry Grants page and the California Grants Portal for solicitations; applications are submitted online during each window. Residents who want trees should ask their city urban forester or a local tree nonprofit whether they are applying.

**When:** Periodic solicitations; the Green Schoolyards 2025/2026 round ran April 1 to May 29, 2026

**For:** Municipalities, Community groups, Schools

> Note: No solicitation was open when checked in November 2026; CAL FIRE's page said the 2025/2026 Green Schoolyards application period is closed. Award range and match terms are from the 2021 program listing on the California Grants Portal and may differ in the next round. CAL FIRE's own page could not be fetched directly for this entry.
