## About

The Woodland Trust was founded in 1972 in Devon by Kenneth Watkins and is headquartered in Grantham, Lincolnshire, with offices in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It owns and cares for more than 1,000 woods covering over 33,000 hectares, restores ancient woodland and plantations on ancient woodland sites, campaigns on woodland protection, and creates new native woodland on its own estate and through free and subsidised tree packs for schools, communities, landowners and farmers (MOREwoods, MOREhedges). It reported income of 89.4 million pounds in 2024-25.

## Programs

- **Free trees for schools and communities** — Tree adoption & giveaways: Gives away free native sapling packs to schools, councils, clubs and community groups across the UK. https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/plant-trees/schools-and-communities/
- **MOREwoods and MOREhedges** — Afforestation: Subsidises up to 75% of the cost of trees and protection for landowners planting 500 or more trees on at least half a hectare, or more than 100 metres of new hedging. https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/plant-trees/
- **Ancient woodland restoration** — Tree care & maintenance: Restores plantations on ancient woodland sites (PAWS) and other damaged ancient woods on the Trust's estate and on private land. https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/about-us/

## Metrics

> Note: The Woodland Trust says it planted more than five million trees in its 2024-25 year (June 2024 to May 2025). Its 2024-25 report and accounts record 4.6 million trees delivered by its nursery suppliers in that financial year, 1,046,790 free trees given to schools and community groups, and 2,548 hectares of new wooded habitat created. The supply figure counts trees bought in; the planting figure counts trees put in the ground by the Trust and its partners.

| Metric | Year | Value | Cumulative | Program | Confidence | Source |
|---|---|---:|---|---|---|---|
| Hectares restored | 2025 | 2,548 | no (that year) | organization-wide | Self-reported | [source](https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/media/bvdedeju/woodland-trust-report-and-accounts-2024-2025.pdf) Report and accounts 2024-25, p.13 achievements: 'Created 2,548 hectares of new wooded habitat and 209,868 metres of hedgerows' (new woodland creation, not restoration) |
| Seedlings produced | 2025 | 4,600,000 | no (that year) | organization-wide | Self-reported | [source](https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/media/bvdedeju/woodland-trust-report-and-accounts-2024-2025.pdf) Report and accounts 2024-25, p.47: 'In the 2024/25 financial year, 4.6 million trees were delivered in support of our work, 99.9% of which were grown using peat-free media' (trees supplied under nursery growing contracts, not a planting count) |
| Trees distributed | 2025 | 1,046,790 | no (that year) | organization-wide | Self-reported | [source](https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/media/bvdedeju/woodland-trust-report-and-accounts-2024-2025.pdf) Report and accounts 2024-25, p.13 achievements: 'Distributed 1,046,790 free trees to schools and community groups, with over 19% delivered to postcodes with a low tree equity score' |
| Trees planted | 2025 | 5,000,000 | no (that year) | organization-wide | Self-reported | [source](https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/support-us/give/how-we-spend-your-money) 'We planted more than five million new trees last year' (June 2024 - May 2025 financial year) |

Confidence: self-reported is the organization's own published figure; independently verified means a third party confirmed it; estimated means TreeRM derived it and the note says how.
