## About

Trees4Trees is the tree-planting program of Yayasan Bumi Hijau Lestari, an Indonesian foundation based in Semarang, Central Java, active since 2008. It grows seedlings in its own nurseries and distributes them to smallholder farmers who plant and own the trees on their land, with mangrove planting in coastal areas such as Kampung Laut in Cilacap, and monitors survival for up to two years. In its April 2024-March 2025 planting season it planted 4.65 million trees across 15 regions, bringing its total to about 15.9 million trees since 2008. Businesses fund planting through its Trees4Trade program and each tree can be tracked online.

## Programs

- **Smallholder community forestry** — Agroforestry (2008–present): Distributes nursery-grown timber and fruit seedlings to smallholder farmers in watersheds across Java and Bali, with training and ownership of the trees staying with the farmer. https://trees4trees.org/get-involved/business/
- **Coastal mangrove restoration** — Mangrove restoration: Mangrove planting with coastal communities, including Kampung Laut in Cilacap Regency, home to southern Central Java's largest mangrove forest.
- **Community nurseries** — Nurseries & seedlings: Four nurseries with a stated capacity of 6 million seedlings a year across 33 tree species, staffed partly by seasonal local workers.
- **Youth for Change** — Education & advocacy: Environmental education and planting events with schools, universities and youth groups. https://trees4trees.org/get-involved/academic/

## Metrics

> Note: Trees4Trees' 2024 report covers tree-planting operations from April 2024 to March 2025 but its financial year 2024. The foreword rounds the cumulative total to 'over 15 million' while the infographic in the same report says 15.9 million (as of the report's December 2025 publication); third-party partner pages show older totals (11.2 million in late 2024, 6.5 million undated). The 94 percent figure is a first-round check that distributed trees were planted and alive, not a long-term survival rate.
