## About

The LEPL National Forestry Agency, under Georgia's Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, manages the state forest fund (about 1.7 million hectares in 903 ranger beats) and implements forest care, restoration and afforestation. Its work combines planting of seedlings grown in its own temporary nurseries from seed it collects with measures to promote natural regeneration, in projects such as the fire-damaged Daba forest near Borjomi (345,530 seedlings on 144 ha plus natural regeneration on 492 ha since 2017), riparian (Chala) forest restoration in Kakheti and Kvemo Kartli, and Red List species plantings in Guria. The agency reports forest restoration works on up to 4,085.9 hectares in 2024-2025 and nearly 2,600 hectares across nine regions in 2026, within a 10-year plan to restore up to 51,000 hectares by 2036 (press coverage cites more than 7,000 hectares restored nationwide over the previous decade). Its figures are 'areas under restoration measures' including natural regeneration and fencing, not purely planted area.

## Programs

- **Degraded forest restoration (forestry reform plan 2025-2036)** — Reforestation (2025–present): Nationwide programme of planting and natural-regeneration measures on degraded state forest, including riparian forests in Kakheti and Kvemo Kartli, with a plan of up to 51,000 hectares by 2036. https://forestry.gov.ge/En/News/Details/1391
- **Borjomi (Daba) fire-damaged forest restoration** — Disaster & fire recovery (2017–present): Restoration of forest burned in the 2008 war and again in 2017 near Daba, Borjomi municipality, through planting and assisted natural regeneration on 636 hectares since 2017. https://forestry.gov.ge/En/News/Details/1353

## Metrics

> Note: The agency reports hectares under 'forest care and restoration measures', which include fencing and assisted natural regeneration as well as planting, so the 4,085.9 ha (2024-2025 combined) and about 2,600 ha (2026) figures are not planted area and are not directly comparable to the older 150 ha-per-year planting baseline (2021). The 7,000+ ha decade total comes from a ministry official quoted in a business weekly; a ministry release citing 1,722 ha for the 2025-2026 reporting period could not be opened (404/503). No national seedling count or survival rate is published; the agency has had two heads in the period (Kakha Tsertsvadze in 2025, Besik Amiranashvili in 2026). Founding year of the LEPL not stated on its English site.
