## About

Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) is a Johannesburg-based non-profit company founded in 1990 that runs tree planting, forest landscape restoration, food gardening and sustainability education programmes across South Africa, largely funded by corporate sponsors. Its Trees for All programme plants trees at schools, clinics and other shared spaces through volunteer days, Trees for Homes gives fruit and indigenous trees to low-income households, and EduPlant trains schools in permaculture gardening. The organization reports 4.9 million trees planted since 1990, 21,202 of them in 2024 across 99 volunteer days.

## Programs

- **Trees for All** — Urban forestry: Sponsor-funded volunteer planting days that green schools, clinics and community spaces with indigenous and fruit trees; 99 volunteer days and 21,202 trees across 462 beneficiaries in 2024. https://trees.africa/impact
- **Trees for Homes** — Tree adoption & giveaways: Provides low-income households with fruit and indigenous trees plus training on care, with household-level survival monitoring. https://trees.africa/impact
- **Forest Landscape Restoration** — Reforestation: Restores degraded land in partnership with communities and corporate funders; 53 hectares of degraded land restored in 2024. https://trees.africa/impact

## Metrics

> Note: FTFA's homepage shows 4.9 million trees planted since 1990 and a 92% 'project success and survival rate', while its Annual Review 2024 reports 21,202 trees planted in 2024 and a 96.6% survival rate for the Trees for Homes programme; the two survival figures measure different things. At the 2024 pace the cumulative total reflects much larger planting in earlier decades. FTFA calls itself a social enterprise on its website but is registered as a Non-Profit Company (1991/001061/08) and public benefit organisation.
