## About

Canopy was created in 1996 to support Palo Alto's urban forestry programs and became an independent 501(c)(3) in 2002. It plants and cares for trees in Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, Mountain View, Belle Haven and North Fair Oaks through programs including Branching Out (with CAL FIRE), the South Palo Alto Tree Initiative and Mountain View school plantings, and runs Teen Urban Foresters, the Community Forestry School and K-12 lessons. In 2025 it reported planting 420 trees and caring for more than 450 with over 1,300 volunteers.

- **Young Tree Care** — Tree care & maintenance: Community Forester volunteers prune, mulch and survey Canopy-planted young trees in Palo Alto and East Palo Alto.

> Note: Canopy's impact reports label most figures simply '2025' or '2023-2024' while the financial sections refer to fiscal years ending June 30 (FY25 is July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025), so the 420 and 539 annual planting figures are treated as fiscal-year totals. Canopy publishes no cumulative tree total; its tree-planting page says only 'several thousand trees', with past initiatives of 2,000+ trees at schools and parks and 1,000+ in East Palo Alto, and the South Palo Alto Tree Initiative has added over 1,000 trees since 2016.
