## About

Armenia Tree Project (ATP) was founded in 1994 by Carolyn Mugar in response to the deforestation of Armenia's post-independence energy crisis. It grows native seedlings at four nurseries (Mirak in Margahovit, Karin, Khachpar and the Bilezikian greenhouse) plus a backyard-nursery network of about 150 rural families, and plants them through a Forestry program that afforests community land in Lori, Shirak and Kotayk (1,000,050 trees in 2025) and a Community Tree Planting program for schoolyards, parks and other sites in Yerevan and all regions. Its Environmental Education program has reached more than 114,000 students and teachers since 2004 through two education centers and eco-clubs. ATP planted its 9 millionth tree in Ashtarak in May 2025; the organisation is run from Yerevan (Arshakunyats 57/5, labelled headquarters on its site) with a US fundraising office in Massachusetts (Woburn in its annual reports, Watertown in the current website footer), and is a project of the Armenian Assembly of America for 501(c)(3) purposes.

## Programs

- **Forestry (afforestation and reforestation)** — Afforestation: Plants native oak, pine, birch, ash, maple and other species on degraded community land in Lori, Shirak and Kotayk, hiring villagers as seasonal workers and maintaining sites with weeding, fencing and replanting. https://armeniatree.org/our-work/forestry
- **Community Tree Planting / Urban Greening** — Urban forestry: Plants trees and shrubs at schools, kindergartens, hospitals, parks, churchyards and other community sites in Yerevan and all regions, and distributes fruit trees to border-village families. https://armeniatree.org/our-work/urban-greening
- **Nurseries and Backyard Nursery Program** — Nurseries & seedlings: Four nurseries producing more than a million native seedlings a year plus a Backyard Nursery Program paying rural families to grow seedlings. https://armeniatree.org/our-work/nurseries
- **Environmental Education** — Education & advocacy (2004–present): Forest-science and stewardship teaching through two education centers, school programs and eco-clubs across Armenia. https://armeniatree.org/our-work/environmental-education

## Metrics

> Note: ATP's website headline says '10M+ trees planted since 1994' while the 2025 annual report (published 2026) says 'over nine million'; the 9 millionth tree was planted in May 2025, so the 10 million figure likely reflects 2026 plantings not yet documented in a report. Forestry and Community Tree Planting counts are reported separately and the forestry count includes trees planted for maintenance/replanting; survival rates are not published. ATP files no Form 990 of its own because it operates under the 501(c)(3) ruling of its fiscal agent, the Armenian Assembly of America (EIN 52-1614093), so ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer has no entry; financial figures come from ATP's annual reports.
