Teak is planted in plantations and on farm boundaries across India, South-East Asia, Africa and Latin America on an 80-year rotation (much shorter in farm forestry), and its durable, oily timber resists termites and marine borers. It sheds leaves for three to four months in the dry season and demands full sun.","care":"Plant stumps or seedlings at 2 x 2 m at the start of the rains; weed and protect from fire and grazing for three years. Thin at 5, 10, 18 and 28 years. Early growth is rapid (13 m in five years) then slows after 15 to 20 years. Teak defoliator and skeletoniser moths, bee-hole borers and bacterial wilt in young plants are the main pests. Pure stands erode soil, so mix with indigenous species.","benefits":["long_lived","shade","carbon","pollinators","fast_canopy"],"uses":["timber","agroforestry","reforestation","parks"],"cautions":["heavy_litter","large_roots"],"image_url":"https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ca/Starr_010304-0485_Tectona_grandis.jpg","image_credit":"Wikimedia Commons, file Starr_010304-0485_Tectona_grandis.jpg (see file page for author and licence)","sources":["https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=1603","https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb/AFTPDFS/Tectona_grandis.PDF","https://www.gbif.org/species/2925649","https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?taxonid=287459"],"data_note":null,"updated_at":"2026-11-08T01:00:46.205Z","page_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/tectona-grandis","markdown_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/tectona-grandis.md","regions":[{"country":"ID","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Java; native per ICRAF, introduced per WCVP","source_url":"https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=1603"},{"country":"IN","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Central and peninsular India","source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/2925649"},{"country":"LA","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/2925649"},{"country":"MM","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/2925649"},{"country":"TH","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/2925649"},{"country":"BR","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Plantations; exotic per ICRAF","source_url":"https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=1603"},{"country":"CR","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Major plantation species; introduced per WCVP","source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/2925649"},{"country":"NG","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Plantations; exotic per ICRAF","source_url":"https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=1603"},{"country":"PA","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Plantations; introduced per WCVP","source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/2925649"},{"country":"TZ","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Plantations; exotic per ICRAF","source_url":"https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=1603"}],"license":"CC-BY-4.0"}
