Introduced to Paris around 1602, it is now one of the most widespread trees in Europe and regarded as invasive in most European countries, where it suckers into dry grasslands and enriches the soil with nitrogen, squeezing out rare native plants. Not on the EU list of Union concern, but regulated in Portugal and listed as invasive in Switzerland, Luxembourg and South Africa.","care":"Needs no watering once established and tolerates heat and drought. Prune in late summer or autumn, never spring, when it bleeds. Expect vigorous root suckers, brittle branches that snap in wind, and seedlings everywhere; bark, leaves and seeds are poisonous to people and livestock. Locust borer and leaf miner attack it. Not recommended for gardens; where it is already established, cutting alone stimulates suckering.","benefits":["nitrogen_fixing","pollinators","drought_tolerant","fast_canopy","erosion_control","flowers"],"uses":["timber","reforestation","windbreak"],"cautions":["invasive_elsewhere","thorns","weak_wood","toxic_parts","large_roots"],"image_url":"https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/86/Robina9146.JPG","image_credit":"Wikimedia Commons, file Robina9146.JPG (see file page for author and licence)","sources":["https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/robinia-pseudoacacia/","https://gd.eppo.int/taxon/ROBPS/categorization","https://www.neobiota.lu/robinia-pseudoacacia","https://plants.usda.gov/DocumentLibrary/plantguide/pdf/pg_rops.pdf","https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=1454","https://faolex.fao.org/docs/pdf/saf220858.pdf","https://www.gbif.org/species/5352251"],"data_note":null,"updated_at":"2026-11-08T01:00:46.205Z","page_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/robinia-pseudoacacia","markdown_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/robinia-pseudoacacia.md","regions":[{"country":"US","region":"AL","locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Appalachian native range.","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ROPS"},{"country":"US","region":"AR","locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Ozark and Ouachita native range.","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ROPS"},{"country":"US","region":"GA","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5352251"},{"country":"US","region":"KY","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5352251"},{"country":"US","region":"MO","locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Ozark and Ouachita native range.","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ROPS"},{"country":"US","region":"NC","locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Appalachian native range.","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ROPS"},{"country":"US","region":"OK","locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Ozark and Ouachita native range.","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ROPS"},{"country":"US","region":"PA","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5352251"},{"country":"US","region":"TN","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5352251"},{"country":"US","region":"VA","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5352251"},{"country":"US","region":"WV","locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Appalachian native range.","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ROPS"},{"country":"AU","region":"NSW","locality":"Sydney","status":"recommended","note":"On the City of Sydney Street Tree Master Plan 2023 precinct planting palette","source_url":"https://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/-/media/corporate/files/publications/strategies-action-plans/street-tree-master-plan/precinct-summaries-2023.pdf"},{"country":"US","region":"DC","locality":"Washington","status":"recommended","note":"On the Casey Trees Tree Rebate eligible species list","source_url":"https://caseytrees.org/rebate"},{"country":"DE","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Introduced and widely naturalised per WCVP;
