The rounded-lobed leaves emerge pink, mature dark green and turn wine-red to brown in fall. Acorns feed turkeys, jays, woodpeckers and deer, and the tree hosts hundreds of caterpillar species. It needs a large yard or park and does not belong in a parking strip.","care":"Hard to transplant because of its taproot, so start with a small tree in full sun and deep, well-drained acidic soil and keep it watered for two seasons. Prune only in the dormant season so beetles that spread oak wilt are not attracted to fresh wounds. Oak wilt, anthracnose, galls, scale and two-lined chestnut borer occur but rarely matter on a healthy tree; protect the roots from construction and compaction.","benefits":["shade","wildlife","pollinators","birds","edible","fall_color","long_lived","drought_tolerant"],"uses":["yard_shade","parks","timber","reforestation"],"cautions":["large_roots","heavy_litter","toxic_parts"],"image_url":"https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e6/Keeler_Oak_Tree_-_distance_photo%2C_May_2013.jpg","image_credit":"Marty Aligata at English Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","sources":["https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/quercus-alba/","https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/white-oak/","https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/QUAL","https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quercus_alba"],"data_note":null,"updated_at":"2026-11-08T01:00:46.205Z","page_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/quercus-alba","markdown_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/quercus-alba.md","regions":[{"country":"CA","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Native to southern Ontario and Quebec.","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/QUAL"},{"country":"US","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Native across the eastern US from Maine and Minnesota to Florida and Texas (more than 15 states).","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/QUAL"},{"country":"CA","region":"ON","locality":"Toronto","status":"recommended","note":"On Toronto's list of species planted on streets (native to Ontario).","source_url":"https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/water-environment/trees/tree-planting/species-planted-on-streets/"},{"country":"US","region":"CO","locality":"Denver","status":"recommended","note":"On the Denver Office of the City Forester Approved Street Tree List","source_url":"https://www.denvergov.org/content/dam/denvergov/Portals/747/documents/forestry/Street_tree_guide.pdf"},{"country":"US","region":"DC","locality":"Washington","status":"recommended","note":"On the Casey Trees Tree Rebate eligible species list","source_url":"https://caseytrees.org/rebate"},{"country":"US","region":"GA","locality":"Atlanta","status":"recommended","note":"On the Trees Atlanta Top 50 Atlanta Trees list","source_url":"https://treesatlanta.org/resources/50-atlanta-trees/"},{"country":"US","region":"MA","locality":"Boston","status":"recommended","note":"On the City of Boston Urban Forestry Division recommended public street trees list","source_url":"https://www.boston.gov/urban-forestry-division"},{"country":"US","region":"TX","locality":"Dallas","status":"recommended","note":"On the City of Dallas Article X Approved Tree List","source_url":"https://dallas.gov/departments/sustainabledevelopment/buildinginspection/DCH%20documents/pdf/BI_Approved%20Tree%20List.pdf"},{"country":"US","region":"TX","locality":"Houston","status":"recommended","note":"On the City of Houston Planning and Development Department Street Tree List","source_url":"https://www.houstontx.gov/planning/DevelopRegs/StreetTree_files/StreetTree.xlsx"}],"license":"CC-BY-4.0"}
