It takes sun or part shade, needs little water once established, and feeds bees, butterflies and birds. One of the best small native trees for Austin yards.","care":"Plant in a well-drained site with reasonable soil depth; water weekly the first two summers. Prune lightly after flowering only to shape or raise the canopy. Fruit drops in July-September and can be messy on hard surfaces but is good for jelly. Generally pest-free compared with cultivated plums.","benefits":["flowers","pollinators","edible","wildlife","birds","drought_tolerant","small_space"],"uses":["small_yard","food","parks"],"cautions":["messy_fruit"],"image_url":"https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b5/Prunus_mexicana-fruits-leaves.jpg","image_credit":"Jim Conrad, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","sources":["https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/PRME","https://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=PRME","https://www.austintexas.gov/watershed-protection/plant-guide/plum-mexican","https://www.treefolks.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/NeighborWoodsTreeMenu-2026.pdf","https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?taxonid=286449"],"data_note":null,"updated_at":"2026-11-08T01:00:46.205Z","page_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/prunus-mexicana","markdown_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/prunus-mexicana.md","regions":[{"country":"US","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Also native in: IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MO, NE, OH, SD, WI (USDA PLANTS distribution)","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/PRME"},{"country":"US","region":"AL","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/PRME"},{"country":"US","region":"AR","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/PRME"},{"country":"US","region":"GA","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/PRME"},{"country":"US","region":"LA","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/PRME"},{"country":"US","region":"MS","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/PRME"},{"country":"US","region":"NC","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/PRME"},{"country":"US","region":"OK","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/PRME"},{"country":"US","region":"SC","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/PRME"},{"country":"US","region":"TN","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/PRME"},{"country":"US","region":"TX","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/PRME"},{"country":"US","region":"TX","locality":"Austin","status":"recommended","note":"On the City of Austin Grow Green native and adapted plant list (Watershed Protection).
