Since the 1800s it has shaded coffee and cacao, and it is now the key tree of alley cropping and improved fallows on worn-out Amazonian soils because it fixes nitrogen, drops abundant litter and resprouts after pruning. Short-lived, like most pioneers.","care":"Plant fresh seed (it loses viability in two weeks) at the start of the rains and keep a 1 m circle weed-free for six months. Prune or pollard above 0.75 m, cutting 3 cm above a node; it regrows strongly. Needs no watering once established and tolerates six-month droughts. Leaf-eating caterpillars, fruit flies in the pods and mistletoe are the main problems.","benefits":["nitrogen_fixing","edible","shade","fast_canopy","pollinators","wildlife","flood_tolerant"],"uses":["agroforestry","food","yard_shade","reforestation"],"cautions":["short_lived","heavy_litter"],"image_url":"https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/59/Inga_edulis_04.jpg","image_credit":"Wikimedia Commons, file Inga_edulis_04.jpg (see file page for author and licence)","sources":["https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=991","https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb/AFTPDFS/Inga_edulis.PDF","https://www.gbif.org/species/5357677"],"data_note":null,"updated_at":"2026-11-08T01:00:46.205Z","page_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/inga-edulis","markdown_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/inga-edulis.md","regions":[{"country":"BO","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5357677"},{"country":"BR","region":"AM","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5357677"},{"country":"BR","region":"PA","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5357677"},{"country":"CO","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5357677"},{"country":"EC","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5357677"},{"country":"PE","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5357677"},{"country":"VE","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5357677"},{"country":"CR","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Introduced; a common coffee shade tree","source_url":"https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=991"},{"country":"HN","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Introduced per WCVP","source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5357677"},{"country":"PA","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Introduced per WCVP","source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5357677"},{"country":"TZ","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Introduced per WCVP","source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5357677"}],"license":"CC-BY-4.0"}
