It takes sun or shade, drought or flooding, and heavy shearing, and is North America's only native caffeinated plant. The berries are not for people.","care":"Water the first summer, then it is nearly carefree. Can be sheared as a hedge or limbed up into a small multi-trunk tree; shape annually since the interior gets twiggy. Female plants need a male nearby to fruit; most nursery plants are female. Pests are minor (leaf miner, scale). Highly flammable, so keep it out of a defensible space around rural homes.","benefits":["birds","wildlife","drought_tolerant","salt_tolerant","flood_tolerant","small_space","pollinators"],"uses":["screening","hedgerow","small_yard","street_tree"],"cautions":["toxic_parts"],"image_url":"https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/53/Ilex_vomitoria.jpg","image_credit":"Luteus, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","sources":["https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ILVO","https://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=ILVO","https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/ilex-vomitoria/","https://www.austintexas.gov/watershed-protection/plant-guide/holly-yaupon","https://www.treefolks.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/NeighborWoodsTreeMenu-2026.pdf"],"data_note":null,"updated_at":"2026-11-08T01:00:46.205Z","page_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/ilex-vomitoria","markdown_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/ilex-vomitoria.md","regions":[{"country":"US","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Also native in: VA (USDA PLANTS distribution)","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ILVO"},{"country":"US","region":"AL","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ILVO"},{"country":"US","region":"AR","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ILVO"},{"country":"US","region":"FL","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ILVO"},{"country":"US","region":"GA","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ILVO"},{"country":"US","region":"LA","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ILVO"},{"country":"US","region":"MS","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ILVO"},{"country":"US","region":"NC","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ILVO"},{"country":"US","region":"OK","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ILVO"},{"country":"US","region":"SC","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ILVO"},{"country":"US","region":"TX","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ILVO"},{"country":"US","region":"TX","locality":"Austin","status":"recommended","note":"On the City of Austin Grow Green native and adapted plant list (Watershed Protection).
