It is also the most widely planted eucalypt in the world, grown for fuelwood, poles and shelter from Ethiopia and Kenya to India, Spain and California. Abroad it is debated: it gives fast income and firewood but is blamed for drying soils and streams and suppressing other plants, and South Africa restricts it near rivers while permitting plantations.","care":"Grows over 3 m a year on good sites; weed around young trees up to three times a year until the canopy closes. Water in the first dry season only. Old trees drop large limbs without warning, so keep them away from houses and camp sites. Termites, aphids, eucalyptus snout beetle and borers attack stressed young trees.","benefits":["shade","fast_canopy","flood_tolerant","drought_tolerant","wildlife","birds","pollinators","erosion_control","long_lived"],"uses":["riparian","timber","windbreak","agroforestry","parks"],"cautions":["weak_wood","heavy_litter","large_roots","invasive_elsewhere"],"image_url":"https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f8/700_yr_red_river_gum02.jpg","image_credit":"Wikimedia Commons, file 700_yr_red_river_gum02.jpg (see file page for author and licence)","sources":["https://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Eucalyptus~camaldulensis","https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=760","https://faolex.fao.org/docs/pdf/saf220858.pdf","https://www.gbif.org/species/11869920"],"data_note":null,"updated_at":"2026-11-08T01:00:46.205Z","page_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/eucalyptus-camaldulensis","markdown_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/eucalyptus-camaldulensis.md","regions":[{"country":"AU","region":"NSW","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Eucalyptus~camaldulensis"},{"country":"AU","region":"NT","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Eucalyptus~camaldulensis"},{"country":"AU","region":"QLD","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Eucalyptus~camaldulensis"},{"country":"AU","region":"SA","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Eucalyptus~camaldulensis"},{"country":"AU","region":"VIC","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Eucalyptus~camaldulensis"},{"country":"AU","region":"WA","locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Eucalyptus~camaldulensis"},{"country":"ES","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Planted; exotic per ICRAF","source_url":"https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=760"},{"country":"ET","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Widely planted for fuelwood and poles; ICRAF lists it as exotic here","source_url":"https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=760"},{"country":"IN","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Planted; exotic per ICRAF","source_url":"https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=760"},{"country":"KE","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Planted; exotic per ICRAF","source_url":"https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=760"},{"country":"ZA","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"invasive","note":"NEMBA 2020: Category 1b in riparian areas, protected areas and listed ecosystems, and in Fynbos, Grassland, Savanna and Albany Thicket biomes; Category 2 (permit) for plantations, woodlots and bee-forage areas; not listed in the Karoo and Desert biomes","source_url":"https://faolex.fao.org/docs/pdf/saf220858.pdf"}],"license":"CC-BY-4.0"}
