It is sacred to the Maya and the national tree of Guatemala and Puerto Rico, and its seed pods yield kapok, the buoyant stuffing fibre. Leafless for months, it is a pioneer that colonises clearings quickly, and its size and roots suit only plazas, parks and farmland.","care":"Plant in full sun in deep soil, cutting rank growth around seedlings for the first two years until they overtop weeds; taungya intercropping is traditional. Needs no watering after establishment. Give it an enormous root run away from paving and buildings. Defoliating caterpillars, mistletoe and wood-rotting fungi attack it; the soft timber is vulnerable to insects.","benefits":["shade","wildlife","birds","pollinators","fast_canopy","long_lived","carbon"],"uses":["parks","agroforestry","reforestation"],"cautions":["large_roots","surface_roots","thorns","heavy_litter"],"image_url":"https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/57/Panguana-Lupuna-2008-2.jpg","image_credit":"Wikimedia Commons, file Panguana-Lupuna-2008-2.jpg (see file page for author and licence)","sources":["https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb2/speciesprofile.php?Spid=501","https://apps.worldagroforestry.org/treedb/AFTPDFS/Ceiba_pentandra.PDF","https://www.gbif.org/species/5406697","https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?taxonid=277950"],"data_note":null,"updated_at":"2026-11-08T01:00:46.205Z","page_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/ceiba-pentandra","markdown_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/ceiba-pentandra.md","regions":[{"country":"BR","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Amazon and north-east","source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5406697"},{"country":"CO","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5406697"},{"country":"CR","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5406697"},{"country":"CU","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5406697"},{"country":"GT","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"National tree","source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5406697"},{"country":"MX","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5406697"},{"country":"PE","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":null,"source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5406697"},{"country":"PR","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"National tree of Puerto Rico","source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5406697"},{"country":"GH","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Introduced per WCVP (long established and often treated as native in West Africa)","source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5406697"},{"country":"ID","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Introduced; Java was the main kapok producer","source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5406697"},{"country":"IN","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Introduced per WCVP","source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5406697"},{"country":"NG","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Introduced per WCVP","source_url":"https://www.gbif.org/species/5406697"}],"license":"CC-BY-4.0"}
