It grows fast when young, often as a multi-trunked clump, and is the state tree of New Hampshire. South of about zone 6 it is short-lived because summer heat stresses it and bronze birch borer finishes it off.","care":"Plant in full sun with the roots in cool, mulched, consistently moist soil; a soaker hose in dry summers is worthwhile. Prune only when fully dormant or in late summer, never in spring when it bleeds. Bronze birch borer (D-shaped exit holes, dieback from the top) attacks stressed trees; birch leafminer and aphids are cosmetic.","benefits":["fall_color","fast_canopy","wildlife","birds","pollinators","salt_tolerant"],"uses":["yard_shade","parks","reforestation"],"cautions":["short_lived","pest_prone","surface_roots"],"image_url":"https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/68/13._The_Fall_of_Acadia_%284039110079%29.jpg","image_credit":"InAweofGod'sCreation, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons","sources":["https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/betula-papyrifera/","https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/paper-birch/","https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/BEPA","https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betula_papyrifera"],"data_note":null,"updated_at":"2026-11-08T01:00:46.205Z","page_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/betula-papyrifera","markdown_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/betula-papyrifera.md","regions":[{"country":"CA","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Native in every province and territory except Nunavut.","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/BEPA"},{"country":"US","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Native across Alaska and the northern states from Washington to Maine, with outliers south to North Carolina and New Mexico (more than 15 states); state tree of New Hampshire.","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/BEPA"},{"country":"CA","region":"AB","locality":"Calgary","status":"recommended","note":"On the City of Calgary Top Tree Species for Calgary list","source_url":"https://www.calgary.ca/parks/trees/top-species-for-calgary.html"}],"license":"CC-BY-4.0"}
