Female trees carry heavy clusters of winged seeds all winter and seed themselves everywhere, and the weak, multi-trunked wood breaks in storms and ice. It is a prairie windbreak staple and a pioneer on waste ground, but nurseries rarely sell it; male cultivars like 'Kelly's Gold' and 'Flamingo' avoid seeds and boxelder bugs.","care":"Needs little care; plant male cultivars to avoid seed litter and boxelder bugs, which breed on female trees and invade houses in fall. Prune for structure when dormant and expect storm cleanup. Anthracnose, powdery mildew, cankers and borers occur.","benefits":["fast_canopy","flood_tolerant","drought_tolerant","windbreak","wildlife","birds","edible"],"uses":["windbreak","riparian","reforestation"],"cautions":["weak_wood","short_lived","messy_fruit","allergenic_pollen","toxic_parts","invasive_elsewhere"],"image_url":"https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9a/Acer_negundo_44809168.jpg","image_credit":"CK Kelly, CC BY 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","sources":["https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/acer-negundo/","https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/boxelder/","https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ACNE2","https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_negundo","https://www.ontario.ca/page/manitoba-maple","https://www.ontarioinvasiveplants.ca/invasive-plants/species/manitoba-maple/"],"data_note":null,"updated_at":"2026-11-08T01:00:46.205Z","page_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/acer-negundo","markdown_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/acer-negundo.md","regions":[{"country":"CA","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Native to Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and northwestern Ontario; naturalized throughout southern Ontario.","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ACNE2"},{"country":"US","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Native across most of the US east of the Rockies and in parts of the Southwest (more than 15 states).","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ACNE2"},{"country":"CA","region":"AB","locality":"Calgary","status":"recommended","note":"On the City of Calgary Top Tree Species for Calgary list","source_url":"https://www.calgary.ca/parks/trees/top-species-for-calgary.html"},{"country":"US","region":"CA","locality":"San Jose","status":"recommended","note":"On the Our City Forest Community Nursery tree species list","source_url":"https://www.ourcityforest.org/nursery-species"},{"country":"US","region":"DC","locality":"Washington","status":"recommended","note":"On the Casey Trees Tree Rebate eligible species list","source_url":"https://caseytrees.org/rebate"},{"country":"US","region":"TX","locality":"Dallas","status":"recommended","note":"On the City of Dallas Article X Approved Tree List","source_url":"https://dallas.gov/departments/sustainabledevelopment/buildinginspection/DCH%20documents/pdf/BI_Approved%20Tree%20List.pdf"},{"country":"CA","region":"ON","locality":null,"status":"invasive","note":"Ontario Invasive Plant Council treats Manitoba maple as invasive in Ontario riparian and urban areas; its native status in southern Ontario is uncertain and ontario.ca calls it invasive across much of its range.","source_url":"https://www.ontarioinvasiveplants.ca/invasive-plants/species/manitoba-maple/"}],"license":"CC-BY-4.0"}
