It is extremely cold-hardy and drought tolerant, so it has been a favorite small yard, hedge and under-wire tree across the northern Plains and Canada. It seeds heavily into prairies and open woods, and Minnesota, Wisconsin and Connecticut now regulate or restrict the straight species.","care":"Where permitted (or for exempt cultivars), plant in full sun in well-drained soil and water the first season; it tolerates heavy pruning and hedging in late winter. Pests are minor. Remove volunteer seedlings around plantings; seedless or low-seed cultivars are preferred where the species is regulated.","benefits":["fall_color","small_space","drought_tolerant","flowers","wildlife","birds"],"uses":["small_yard","hedgerow","screening","container"],"cautions":["invasive_elsewhere"],"image_url":"https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/Acer_ginnala%2C_Amur_River%2C_Khabarovsky_District%2C_Khabarovsk_Krai%2C_Russia_1.jpg","image_credit":"oleg_kosterin, CC BY 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","sources":["https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/acer-ginnala/","https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ACGI","https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_tataricum_subsp._ginnala","https://www.mda.state.mn.us/plants-insects/minnesota-noxious-weed-list","https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/Invasives/RegulatedSpecies","https://cipwg.uconn.edu/invasive_plant_list/","https://www.pa.gov/en/agencies/dcnr/conservation/wild-plants/invasive-plants/invasive-plant-fact-sheets.html"],"data_note":null,"updated_at":"2026-11-08T01:00:46.205Z","page_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/acer-ginnala","markdown_url":"https://treerm.org/trees/acer-ginnala.md","regions":[{"country":"CN","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"native","note":"Native to northeastern China, Mongolia, the Russian Far East, Korea and Japan.","source_url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acer_tataricum_subsp._ginnala"},{"country":"CA","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Widely planted hardy small tree across the Prairie provinces and Ontario; USDA PLANTS lists it as introduced in Canada.","source_url":"https://plants.usda.gov/plant-profile/ACGI"},{"country":"US","region":null,"locality":null,"status":"adapted","note":"Widely planted small tree across the northern US; naturalized in the Northwest and Midwest.","source_url":"https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/acer-ginnala/"},{"country":"US","region":"CT","locality":null,"status":"invasive","note":"Potentially Invasive on the Connecticut Invasive Plant List (not yet subject to the sale ban).","source_url":"https://cipwg.uconn.edu/invasive_plant_list/"},{"country":"US","region":"MN","locality":null,"status":"invasive","note":"Specially Regulated Noxious Weed in Minnesota; sellers must label it and advise planting away from natural areas.","source_url":"https://www.mda.state.mn.us/plants-insects/minnesota-noxious-weed-list"},{"country":"US","region":"PA","locality":null,"status":"invasive","note":"On Pennsylvania DCNR's invasive plant fact sheet list.","source_url":"https://www.pa.gov/en/agencies/dcnr/conservation/wild-plants/invasive-plants/invasive-plant-fact-sheets.html"},{"country":"US","region":"WI","locality":null,"status":"prohibited","note":"Restricted under Wisconsin NR 40 (all cultivars exempt).","source_url":"https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/Invasives/RegulatedSpecies"}],"license":"CC-BY-4.0"}
