It creates small, dense, native-species 'pocket forests' in urban areas using the Miyawaki method, working through a network of local 'Forest Makers' and funding from corporate partners and donors; its largest concentration of forests is in London. Its 2025 Impact Report counts 263 pocket forests in 62 cities across 28 countries since 2019, covering 215,020 square metres, and reports monitoring of survival, plant height and birdlife.","website_url":"https://www.sugiproject.com","logo_url":null,"founded_year":2019,"org_type":"nonprofit","scope":"global","headquarters":{"city":"San Francisco","region":"California","country":"US","lat":37.7749,"lng":-122.4194},"volunteer_url":"https://www.sugiproject.com/events","donation_url":"https://www.sugiproject.com/about?donate=true","events_url":"https://www.sugiproject.com/events","featured":false,"trees_on_record":40213,"primary_activity":"urban-forestry","activities":[{"slug":"urban-forestry","name":"Urban forestry","primary":true},{"slug":"education-advocacy","name":"Education & advocacy","primary":false},{"slug":"research-monitoring","name":"Research & monitoring","primary":false}],"updated_at":"2026-11-07T21:30:23.685Z","url":"https://treerm.org/org/sugi","markdown_url":"https://treerm.org/org/sugi.md","api_url":"https://treerm.org/api/v1/organizations/sugi","countries":["AU","BE","BR","CL","CM","GB","IN","LB","PK","TH","US","ZA"],"social_links":{"x":"https://twitter.com/sugiproject","instagram":"https://www.instagram.com/sugiproject/","facebook":"https://facebook.com/sugiproject/","linkedin":"https://pk.linkedin.com/company/sugiproject","youtube":"https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5Ii-sttjNbkKBq2-Fpw6vg"},"programs":[{"slug":"london-pocket-forests","name":"SUGi Pocket Forests London","activity":"urban-forestry","description":"Network of 33 Miyawaki pocket forests across London boroughs including Newham, Barking and Dagenham, Lambeth and Kensington and Chelsea, the second-largest concentration of SUGi forests worldwide.","url":"https://www.sugiproject.com/blog/sugi-pocket-forests-london-2024-impact-report","started_year":2021,"ended_year":null},{"slug":"sugi-academy","name":"SUGi Academy","activity":"education-advocacy","description":"Training and resources for communities and schools to create and maintain their own pocket forests.","url":"https://www.sugiproject.com/academy","started_year":null,"ended_year":null}],"metrics":[{"metric_type":"hectares_restored","year":2025,"value":21.5,"is_cumulative":true,"program":null,"source_url":"https://cdn.sanity.io/files/oyzyxja8/v2/fb2bc8597cc32a5098a079e1e641a05ffc6798e8.pdf","source_note":"Converted from '215,020 m2 of pocket forests worldwide' since 2019 in the 2025 Impact Report","confidence":"estimated"},{"metric_type":"survival_rate_pct","year":2025,"value":86,"is_cumulative":false,"program":null,"source_url":"https://cdn.sanity.io/files/oyzyxja8/v2/fb2bc8597cc32a5098a079e1e641a05ffc6798e8.pdf","source_note":"SUGi 2025 Impact Report: mean plant survival rate 86.0% across 91 forests not yet self-sustaining","confidence":"reported"},{"metric_type":"trees_planted","year":2025,"value":40213,"is_cumulative":false,"program":null,"source_url":"https://cdn.sanity.io/files/oyzyxja8/v2/fb2bc8597cc32a5098a079e1e641a05ffc6798e8.pdf","source_note":"SUGi 2025 Impact Report, p.10 'Data & Monitoring': Native Trees Planted '+40,213 since 2024' (31 new forests in 2025)","confidence":"reported"}],"upcoming_events":[{"slug":"sleeping-beauty-webinar-from-ideas-to-implementation-2026-11-09","title":"Sleeping Beauty Webinar | From ideas to implementation","event_type":"other","starts_at":"2026-11-09T09:00:00Z","ends_at":"2026-11-09T10:30:00Z","city":"London","is_virtual":true,"registration_url":"https://www.sleepingbeauty-project.eu/events/from-ideas-to-implementation-a-marketplace-for-neb-nbs-solutions/","url":"https://treerm.org/events/sugi/sleeping-beauty-webinar-from-ideas-to-implementation-2026-11-09"},{"slug":"generation-hope-climate-action-together-2026-11-19","title":"Generation Hope: Climate Action Together","event_type":"other","starts_at":"2026-11-19T18:30:00Z","ends_at":"2026-11-19T21:30:00Z","city":"London","is_virtual":false,"registration_url":"https://www.nhm.ac.uk/events/generation-hope-climate-action-together.html","url":"https://treerm.org/events/sugi/generation-hope-climate-action-together-2026-11-19"}],"license":"CC-BY-4.0"}
